Like 'Cornish Coast 1' this was inspired by the coastline of Cornwall which can be bleak, wild and beautiful. It is one of 10 pieces I created to hang on a giant wooden 'concertina sketchbook' , exhibited at the Penwith Gallery in St Ives in March 2018. I love the concept of concertina sketchbooks because they reflect the relationship between a snapshot in time and the story of which it is part.

When I am on my travels I use sketchbook, paint, collage and camera to capture a sense of the place I am in. Whether walking round my home town of Bristol, visiting Italy or travelling through India I am influenced by shape, texture and colour; by the tensions that exist in that place; and by how they make me feel. In Nepal I felt tension between the beauty of the country, the devastation of the earthquake, and corruption in the distribution of foreign aid. In Nicaragua the lakes and wildlife were serene and beautiful whilst the volcanos and the country's history are full of violence and passion. In Cornwall I feel a tension between the beauty of the coastline and the power of the sea. All of these experiences influence and inform my work back in the studio. I use acrylic paints, crayons, pens, charcoals; and collage whatever materials feel appropriate including photos, newsprint, cardboard and wallpaper.
