About The Artwork

This canvas was originally one of nine canvases I connected together to create a large 90 x 120cm piece, entitled 'Monolith'. It was exhibited at a Warbling Collective exhibition in East London in 2019. But thereafter, its size became a problem to store and, because I suspected that how I'd connected the canvases (I'm never doing that again!) would need attention in the future, I decided to dismantle them back into their individual parts in 2022. Beyond convenience, I liked the narrative this dismantling suggested, maybe because I was aware of some statues in England being destroyed at the time, in response to connections with slavery. Did my dismantled monoliths have a shameful past? Or were they prized fragments of an ancient relic? This is what I wrote about this series when I first made them back in 2019: The recurring shapes in my 'Monument' series are inherited from my previous project in which I restored an artist's leftovers and offcuts back into rectangular panels. Through repetition, these random, coincidental shapes start to become familiar, recognisable. I'm interested in their value; whether nature is alive in these formations. If so, could they become symbols; something we respect or worship like the crucifix? Inspired by the decaying graves in Brompton Cemetery and the stoney appearance of my handmade paper, pulped from leftovers and glued to canvas, I've created a series of monuments commemorating nothing in particular. Each picture stands vacant, awaiting a viewer who may cast their own loving memories or, perhaps, feelings of emptiness upon it.

I am a mixed-media artist based in London. My collages explore the boundaries between the man-made and nature, reanimating found materials, shapes and colours, often the by-products of design. New arrangements are constructed by assimilating inherited material and processing with a mechanical mindset. I believe these serendipitous compositions could hold some inherent value which might offer us a fleeting glimpse of our connection with the world.
