Containing text from Wiliam Blake's poem "Garden of Love" and the Marquis de Sade's "Philosophie dans la Boudoir". This piece is about the complexity, frustration and illusion of desire reflected in the parable of 'The Beggar and the Pot of Gold'. "One day a traveller came by and the beggar called out, "Please give me some money". The traveller said, "I don't have any to give you, but what is that curious box you sit on?" The beggar said, "I don't know, it is just an old box I found many years ago and have sat on ever since." The traveller asked him what was in the box. The beggar replied that he hadn't looked. The traveller replied, "Why not?" and the beggar replied, "there is nothing there." So the traveller said, "How do you know if you have never looked?" After the traveller left, the beggar thought for a while and eventually decided to look inside. He was amazed to find the old box he had sat on for many years was filled with gold." This parable is a metaphor for desire. The beggar is not a literal character but symbolises the idea of desire. Throughout our lives we are consumed by desire. We perpetually search outwardly for the thing that will finally make us happy only to find unfullfillment and more craving. This highly metaphoric story reminds us to appreciate and see what we already have around us or perhaps to even look a little deeper inside us for contentment and see the eternal tranquility within. Original piece is collaged paper and anitquarian book pages with charcoal on wood. It is perfectly recreated here for you in giclee limted edition print on archival quality art paper.

'In my artwork I use classical mythology, literature and films aswell as my own life experiences to analyse what it means to be a woman. I use the female form to show how subtle changes of shape in the outer expression can tell of shifts in the depths of the psyche. By combining charcoal drawings or paintings in oil with collaged text from film scripts, classical literature or my own writing I create a rich layering of script and image to express life's experiences and emotions.'
