GEOMANCY No 5 Collage

I use the Japanese technique, ainigashi to create marbling on handmade paper to capture the actual flow of water directly at the moment I touch the thin sheet to the water's surface. Around these floating forms I build up imagined geographies through the application of layers of powdered pigment, graphite, and mica sprinkled onto the paper and affixed with a binder, creating an encrusted, physical texture. Just as geomancer might toss down a handful of dirt and read meaning into the mess, I throw pigments onto paper on my studio floor, and, "reading" it, begin to build up earth mounds, part imagined bodies of water, chart currents, and flow. I obliterate islets with a turn of the brush, create mountains of color and cavernous depressions, held to the surface within a grid format of a longitude and latitude that is absolutely not to scale.
