Subject: The influence of social media celebrities on contemporary society, and celebrity culture as a substitute for religion. Inspiration: The series inspired by social media celebrities, and the Three Holy Hierarchs: Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom. Composition / Symbolism: - Composition and colours similar to those in Byzantine Iconography. The gold foil card symbolises the divine nature while evoking a sense of prestige, and wealth. Figures wearing long robes that resemble the attire of monks, priests, saints, etc. They are holding smartphones, devices that enable communication, information, and entertainment in the contemporary world. - The social media like halo implies they are revered and respected by their followers, and they are trying to appear holy and virtuous. It also resembles a ring light, which is a device that enhances the appearance of the subject in photography and videography. Faces are deformed, indicating a new kind of aesthetic, and the loss of identity or individuality by excessive cosmetic procedures, beauty apps, and photo filters. The gaze is direct creating a sense of intimacy and connection, but also, of confrontation and challenge. Interpretation: - Critique of society's desire to look ‘other-worldly’. - Celebrities have become a substitute for religion. - Social media have created new concepts of beauty, expression, and connection. - A commentary showing the contrast between ancient and modern, spiritual and material, sacred and profane, human and digital. - The series is a visual comment of our present time in history while documenting the transition from speculative metaphysics to what I call "natural" mythologies. - I invite the viewer to question their own relationship with technology, social media, and celebrity culture, and to form their own interpretations.

Exploring the Intersection of Religion and Celebrity Culture My current project has the overall title Comparative Mythology. It is a series of smaller series that highlights the complex interplay and the similar mechanics behind the two mythologies of religion and celebrity culture. This ongoing project, aims to examine the ways in which these two realms intersect and shape our modern society, ultimately challenging the boundaries of influence, adoration, and belief. By juxtaposing imagery from religious traditions and popular culture, I seek to initiate a dialogue about the parallels that exist between these seemingly disparate worlds. Through the technique of photomontage, I am able to merge and blend visual elements, creating compositions that provoke contemplation and reflection. Religion, with its deep-rooted beliefs and practices, has been a source of authority for thousands of years. In stark contrast, celebrity culture has emerged as a dominant force in contemporary society, captivating the masses with beauty, fame, and usually, talent. In this project, I examine how the influence and adoration granted to religious figures are paralleled in the realm of celebrities. I question whether society's worship of celebrities has become a sort of secular religion, replete with its rituals, icons, and devoted followers. Through my collages, I aim to challenge preconceived notions and provoke critical thinking about our society's values and priorities. By intertwining religious art like Byzantine Iconography with Pop Art and popular culture, I encourage viewers to reflect upon the blurred lines between the sacred and the profane, the divine and the superficial. I am particularly interested in exploring how the visual language associated with religion and celebrity converge. With the help of AI, a photo editing software, and traditional paper collage techniques, I aim to create new narratives and perspectives that provoke contemplation, critique, and possibly even a reevaluation of our own beliefs and the influences that shape our lives. Ultimately, my aim with this project is to spark conversations, provoke introspection, and challenge the way we perceive and interact with both religion and celebrity culture. I want viewers to question the power dynamics, the underlying motivations, and the impact of these intersecting forces have on our individual and collective identities.
