Collage of vintage paper and acrylic paint. The main body is formed from a deconstructed book of Scottish music from 1953, Marr & Co's Royal Collection of Highland Airs. The book bears hand-written notes by the 13-year old girl who learned from it. The textured border has been formed from layers of wallpaper dating from the early 20th century. The picture plays with contrasts. The baroque book cover has been carefully dissected and re-arranged in a dense geometric grid pattern. The 'empty' surround has been formed from pages of music coated with acrylic paint mixed with chalk to create a rough texture. The picture is completed by taking the formal geometry of art-deco paper and tearing it to form a rough border that communicates with the dissected pattern. The collage has been created on a cradled wood panel and treated to archival standards to preserve the colours of the paper. The wood has been sealed with Golden GAC 100, the paper coated on both sides with Golden soft gel medium and the collage protected with Golden UV matte varnish. The rear of the picture bears witness to my realisation that the composition would be transformed if the picture was re-wired to hang horizontally. The collage wraps over the sides of the wood panel and requires no frame. The picture has been wired and is ready to hang. Signed on the reverse with description and title.

You’ll usually see me thinking about composition, playing with pattern and testing spatial relationships, that sort of thing. As for anything else I think about how it affects all the above. I enjoy looking for unlikely structures and trying out fleeting interractions. The question of balance is never far away. When it comes to meaning, the torn and faded materials in my collages show where man has been. I suppose everything reflects an unidealised view of humanity. But I’m also attracted to the opposite, the wide expanses of nature (especially the sea) where there’s not much humanity at all. My influences may not be apparent… I keep coming back to Cézanne and Matisse.
