About The Artwork

This piece of work forms a series of work that explores the human connection, want and need of institutions and the fine line connecting them all, the starting point being the Hollywood institution. The photographic film stills (Series of 12 images) represent the fine line between each institution and the individuals enrolled, registered, signed up, admitted or enforced there. Being a soldier, prisoner, a hollywood star and a patient. And its impact upon our behaviours, decision making, identity and ability to contribute to society. In the 1930s and 40’s Hollywood was seen as the Golden Age of film stars and glamour. But the darker side to the industry has slowly come to light. As a child star Judy Garland talks about how the film studios demanded she’d take “pep pills” to suppress her appetite and keep up her energy. Then, at the end of each shooting day, the film studios would supply the child stars with sleeping tablets. The medium is intrinsic in nature as it is towards celebrity easily accessible and throw away the inkjet printer.

www.thedryingroom.org Representing the UK at The Florence Biennale October 2023 Born in Wales, Uk. My work is about disrupting, questioning, listening. The materials I use are taken from popular culture, history and individual life experiences. Who determines what we learn from our past? My artistic career began with finding a voice, which was my own. My formal education at school was a failure on my behalf whether it was me, my teachers or my parents divorce. I was going nowhere fast but the day I picked up a camera was the beginning of my artistic career, it taught me not to be afraid, to stand up for myself and be a positive force for change. I went to art school in Swansea, Wales UK, when the dominance of social media was in its infancy, the influencer was seen on our TV screens, not on individual devices, dominating the intimacy of our bedrooms, homes, everywhere places. The darkrooms were my temple, I spent every waking minute in them infused and inspired by Cindy Sherman, Larry Clarke, Mullholland drive, American Beauty and many, many many more, artists, makers, musicians. I am fascinated by the pioneers of society whether that is the icons from history or the individual with the loudest voice standing up for the person dismissed, not cared for, forgotten or just a number. Each piece of work I have made is individual and embellishes a visual commentary that poses questions. They are unique, raw, real. But primary they are about finding a voice, and that is the power of art. Now my place of creativity has changed no longer in Wales, I moved to Mallorca where I am surrounded by the thriving art scene which has been largely impacted by the street artists and their narratives of social commentary and activism.
