About The Artwork
This was my first attempt to recreate an unusual visual experience that I had - an Illusory Visual Spread. The image of Jimmy Hendrix is a collage of the Electric Lady Land album cover. The image is made out of hundreds of cut out prints of a pattern, in different shapes,shades and sizes, moved into different positions. The pattern in which the visual occurance originated from is of squares in lines of light green and purple, magenta and black, light green and sap green, magenta and purple. "The phenomenon consists in a reocurrance of visual perceptions over an area greater than that which the stimulus object would be expected to exist. The former phenomenon can be regarded as a sort of visual persevation in time, and the latter representation, visual preservation in space, " Dr MacDonald Crichley (1951) Such an unusual visual experience in an altered state of mind, after seeing this visual repeated pattern on everything, seemed obvious to me to use it in my first piece of art. Also I am an admirer of Jimmy Hendrix's artistic works. The expression on his face shows the moment in time that he is in, that is why I have chosen this image, I would like to think I have added a new dimension to it.

Mick Start - Born in Hertfordshire, England. Self taught Artist Working predominantly with oil paint and multi media to create unique one of a kind art works. I create artwork, which is unusual and unique. I have two principle themes in my work which are: illusory visual spread- a sequence of repetitive coloured squares that are used to create what I had previously seen in an altered state of consciousness and sculpture paintings using multimedia. I work based on the theory that this reality is a simulation - a computerised virtual reality. Theoretical Physicist John Archibald Wheeler quoted : The universe could not exist without us, we are part of an ongoing process, the universe isn't finished yet, it is continually being built. we are continually adding to the universe and we are doing it through consciousness. We live in a participatory universe that continues to ' build itself. ' When creating the sculpture there is no initial concept of the final composition. Addiing modeled shapes to the sculpture is a slow process taking between 18 months to 30 months. I would say the sculpture sort of builds itself., I am creating a new reality by adding information to the simulation, creating something unusual .
