ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I am the caregiver for my sister who has autism. She is also an artist. We were preparing for a show and I had painted Kate with the weight of the world on her shoulders. I asked my sister what else she thought Kate needed. She drew her a house, flowers, and heart. This is a collaboration of sorts. It is hard being a caregiver. It’s also hard being a woman of color. “She wore her heart on her sleeve. And she felt the weight of the world on her shoulders. But she kept going.” I always feel like the weight of the world is on my shoulders. But there is still potential for growth despite the turbulence.

Although I have drawn most of my life no one seemed to notice until I started to paint. I was off work for a year with a back injury and I started painting as a form of therapy. Painting gave me a sense of peace at a very difficult time. After ten years of painting and selling my work, I took my first painting class in 2005. My work can be found in private collections around the world. My inspiration comes from a variety of sources. It could be a piece of fabric, a structure, or a sunrise. The possibilities are endless. I am the caregiver for my sister Rose who has autism and is also an artist.
