This piece is an assemblage of polymer clay squares, resembling the structure of a patchwork quilt. In my mosaics I aim to capture a sense of an imagined history rather than an accurate rendition of the past - a world where wimples and chivalry abound, mythical creatures prowl and magic lurks around every corner, a world that offers an escape from the pressures of the 21st Century. I have an obsession with all things Medieval and also with Victorian Gothic. I love the attention to detail, the preciousness of the materials, the symbology of the images and the craftsmanship that went into making everything from books to buildings. I feel this is often lacking in our modern world, so I endeavour to imbue at least a small sense of that richness in my work. I also have a fascination with light, and am always drawn to materials with a reflective nature, hence you will see a lot of glass and metallics in my work. I live and work in Cornwall, which never ceases to inspire. The countryside around me is abundant with ancient monuments and the remnants of Cornwall’s industrial past, so you may expect to see the odd engine house or portal dolmen making an appearance in my work.
