About The Artwork

This piece is a mixed media mosaic of the Men-an-tol standing stones. The name literally means 'holed stone' in Cornish and the place has long been associated with healing and fertility. The final photograph shows the actual site. The stones and other details are made from polymer clay, finished with acrylic paint and mica powers. The abstract background is made primarily from vitreous tiles and tempered glass, and has been grouted and sealed. The mosaic is further embellished with rhinestones, glass cabochons and found objects. The mosaic is constructed on marine ply with softwood trim, painted with bronze acrylic. The mosaic is ready to hang, with two brass D-rings and picture wire fitted to the back. It would benefit from being positioned where it can catch the light to make the most of the reflective nature of the materials.

In my mosaics I aim to capture a sense of an imagined history rather than an accurate rendition of the past - a world where wimples and chivalry abound, mythical creatures prowl and magic lurks around every corner, a world that offers an escape from the pressures of the 21st Century. I have an obsession with all things Medieval and also with Victorian Gothic. I love the attention to detail, the preciousness of the materials, the symbology of the images and the craftsmanship that went into making everything from books to buildings. I feel this is often lacking in our modern world, so I endeavour to imbue at least a small sense of that richness in my work. I also have a fascination with light, and am always drawn to materials with a reflective nature, hence you will see a lot of glass and metallics in my work. I live and work in Cornwall, which never ceases to inspire. The countryside around me is abundant with ancient monuments and the remnants of Cornwall’s industrial past, so you may expect to see the odd engine house or portal dolmen making an appearance in my work.
