This is an original acrylic/collage drawing as part of my microbiome series. Inspired by micro-macro scale of images the circle and oval cell like shapes in this collage are inspired by nasturtium plant leaves. The shapes in this piece are drawn with permanent ink pen onto new and used tea bags. The tea bags have been washed, cleaned and reused to make the drawings. The colors in the papers are natural staining effects left from the variety of teas. Each circle is hand drawn, cut and collaged onto paper. This piece is taken directly out of one of my sketchbooks, done on 100lb sketch paper.

Ali Herrmann is a mixed media painter, colorist and science lover, whose work explores cellular structures as an origin into her abstract artworks. Creating what she terms ‘micro-biome landscapes,’ Herrmann uses SEM images and organic shapes as inspiration to explore concepts of blood, bacteria, fungi, and unicellular structures within her boldly colorful, abstract artworks. Exploring themes of repetition, rhythmic orders, geometric shapes, and chaos-order theory, Ali brings attention to nature's details that are often overlooked.
