"Recollection" (2018)
acrylic, painted paper collage and wood stain on wood, 24x24 inches

This piece is part of a coordinated set of 6 works, each conceptually different yet similar in color and appearance. Recollection is about looking back on life experiences, nostalgia and memoirs - how memory fades over time and comes back to us in odd moments, when we can understand them, for better or worse. Personally, the thought came from contemplating memories of childhood through my parents' eyes. Being a parent myself, I sense that I am going through similar stages of life that my parents also experienced. We may have observed these phases growing up, but only from a child's perspective. Recollection is about calling back these memories and moments from another point of view.

A FEW NOTES ABOUT MY ART:

What you see is what you get. I take great care to get clear and color-correct photographs of my work, but it always looks better in person. Please see additional images for detail shots, art in context, etc. Dimensions reflect the size of the art itself.

All of my smaller paintings on wood include a frame (custom or artist-made) and ready to hang, unless requested otherwise. Some works on canvas include a frame, but most of them do not require it - usually I will continue the painting around the edges. If you have questions or concerns about framing, please ask me for more options. I’m more than happy to accommodate.

All of my work is made with archival quality techniques and materials, and each gets a nice coat of varnish when they’re finished (usually matte). My smaller paintings are on 1/2” birch or oak hardwood boards, and gallery-wrapped canvases for larger work. Everything is made for permanence, so you can expect it to last forever.

I do not provide artist statements for work, because I feel the work and its title is enough to start the conversation with viewers. In my work, the viewer plays a role in finishing the art, giving it life, visibility and intellectual value. However, many of my pieces do have a story, a symbolism or reference. If you’re interested in learning more about a particular work, please contact me directly or include a note in your offer.

Jim Ford is a multidisciplinary artist and type designer based in Milwaukee. Ford creates a fusion of modern and contemporary abstraction in his “collage paintings” which are activated with his sense of humor, history, culture and spirituality. ------------------------------- Art is a vehicle that affords us adventure and wonder. Each piece is an opportunity to express concepts in a new way as we learn and evolve. In my work, I strive to master the art of storytelling in my own visual language. My art is largely collage-based, though I have a background in drawing and design. Juxtaposing passages of paint, collage and assemblage, I tend to blur the lines between mediums so that the elements are working in unison. My work challenges the viewer to form their own personal analysis, decoding clues while exploring personal emotional and symbolic associations. Fueled by music, inside jokes and observations about modern life, the work tends to take on a humorous attitude with quirky titles and unusual subjects. A progression connects my pieces, which graduate from one “seed” to another, working to create a rhythm, momentum and – ultimately, a distinct abstract language. My work is, at times, a rebellion or reaction to our time and place; and other times embracing the human experience. Each piece is vastly different from the last, and while I employ a number of styles and techniques – my work is perhaps best defined by its compositional style and quality of energy. I’m interested in evolving my work into sculptural forms and experimenting with installation and space. My art practice is about expansion, growth and discovery, more than repetition. Building upon the themes that define my work, I am always seeking new and different ways of remixing materials to propel my artistic vision.
