Lots of texture! A series of twelve 10"x10" pieces on cradled wood panels make up this encaustic mixed media piece. In the photo they are hanging spaced approximately 1.5 inches apart making it 33x45, this can be adjusted to fit your space. Additionally, the bottom 3 (#10, #11 and #12) can be used to the right of the arrangement to make the display 3 horizontal rows.
Each shape is hand cut from natural fiber hand-made papers and then suspended between layers of clear encaustic medium to create a thick translucent surface which draws the viewer into the piece. In areas where the wax application is thickest there is a subtle golden depth of wax atop the creamy white background. I use a torch to manipulate and fuse the wax this gives my surfaces a beautifully textured finish.

Encaustic (bees wax & damar resin), lokta and mango paper, gesso and oil on cradled wood panel. Signed, dated and titled on the back of one, each of the other pieces are numbered. The edges are painted white. Each piece in this installation has hanging wire and is ready to hang!

Human behavior fascinates me. I have a background in Mental Health Counseling and more recently, Applied Behavior Analysis. What compels us to do the things we do? More importantly, why do we do some things only once and others repeatedly? It’s about taking in whatever is presented to us, processing it in the most functional way for us at that moment, and then responding to the original stimulus. I feel that I approach each step of my work the same way. My work is a visual representation of an emotional response to all of the things I experience on any ordinary day. It comes from a place of resolution, gratitude and ultimately happiness. There’s no deep social or political commentary to my work, nor am I trying to emulate one of the greats or to match your sofa, it’s simply a series of reactions. I work with acrylic, mixed media as well as encaustic.
