Scott's Run #17.01 Collage

The image area is 14" by 10" and it is mounted on a 20" by 15" foam board. This is variation #1 of my original painting "Scott's Run #17". I started by making numerous reproductions of the original work in various shades: blues, greens and full color and cut them into small squares. Then I began covering the surface with blocks of colored paper. Gradually, I started bringing in the imagery by applying squares from the color reproductions. I tried to keep cooler colors to the outer edge and moved toward warmer colors in the center. The conceptual idea behind this series is to combine additive and subtractive art techniques in the same work. By doing this, I am trying to make the art technique behave the way nature cycles: beginning with a growth phase, countering with a destructive phase and then having a kind of rebirth phase.
