About The Artwork

I have been a big fan and maker, of collage since art school in London 35 years ago. This interest was first sparked by an introduction to the German artist Kurt Schwitters who worked extensively in the medium around the time of the second world war. As a painter, I was fascinated by how one could achieve everything one can do in paint, in paper, especially when using found materials that hold the history of human usage. This particular work harks back to a time in my youth when my cousins and I would excitedly buy TV magazines that would list all featured movies and shows for the holidays. We were big fans of old movies, especially those of the Marx brothers, Cary Grant, Harold Lloyd, etc. These works are also abstract as I am substantially an abstract maker in any materials I work with. I love the way one can express not only ideas but also emotions through color, texture, and iconography.

I am originally of Indian descent, born in colonial Africa, and moved to London at the end of British rule. I have since then spent 12 years in Australia and now live and work in Valencia in Spain. I love new experiences and fresh perspectives, and my work is often reflective of not only the physical but the cerebral and emotional journies allowed through travel and discovery. I started out with a visual background that was already rich with that brought to Africa by my Indian family. This was then layered with the African culture that we lived amongst for two generations, finally followed by my experiences growing up in London in the 1970s and '80s. I read comic books, watched Dorris Day movies, and listened to David Bowie and Roxie music. This was already a heady mix, but my experiences around the world have added endless possibilities. The more experience one gathers, the more the work becomes an accumulation of one's total bank of iconographies, the harder the job of dis-assembling the imagery. Though it's endless fun to try...
