ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is one of the pieces I made for the Los Angeles series. I have been fortunate to live in numerous places in my adulthood, but Los Angeles is where I feel at home, in complete ease. Somehow I embrace the inherent contradiction living in the city like no others, and feel frictionless navigating between its perpetually beautiful and sunny days and people with the arid darkness just underneath the surface. When I think of Los Angeles, the first thing that comes to mind is its mildness in temperature and atmosphere, especially by the coastline. It's perpetually warm, wind is soft and breezy, temperature always just right. While certain sentimentality and loneliness are quite obvious in my works, I wanted to express the perceived lightness and delight at first glance when observing Los Angeles on its surface. In order to create this work, I first glued several layers of paper on canvas, and peel them off once the surface dried sufficiently which produced the textural element in this piece.

Young makes abstract paintings with paper. At the core of her practice, she explores the concept of impermanence as it relates to life, and the beauty of such mercuriality and unpredictability embedded in the life form. Techniques and process are key to expressing her intention as she unearths the essence of the theme of ephemerality by peeling away colored paper that was first meticulously layered and copiously built up. She is inspired by this process of building and removing intricate layers in order to reveal what is underneath and between – birthing something entire new from the ashes of destruction. In her body of work, melding her past experiences and passion together, Young combines elements from art, design, and craft. Young received her BA in Philosophy from Occidental College, and post graduate studies in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design. Her paintings have been exhibited and placed by galleries and collectors throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
