About The Artwork

The ocean has always inspired me since I was a young child collecting shells at the seaside. It was easy for me to imagine I was one of these creatures--a turtle or a mermaid or fish... I became concerned as I saw plastic on the beaches and less sea life. I eventually learned more about the problems of plastic polluting our oceans and destroying sea life and thus part of our food chain. My parents worked as archaeologists when I was young, so perhaps it was only natural that I saw the World Turtle in a dream complaining to Gaia about this problem. Thus came this painting from a real problem through a dream. Again my work is influenced by both the art of the ancients throughout the world as well as modern art, including the surrealists, and my love of myths, faery tales and the Jungian Archetypes. I am also as usual obsessed with exploring body language. Here its clear that the Turtle is very uncomfortable. He complains to Gaia who is looking at him with compassion and concern while the Mermaids try to console his hurting belly. For once I chose to incorporate the offending material--plastic bags--into the composition to make it more real while still using my usual materials of acrylic painted on canvas with wooden stretcher boards. The style is also visionary/mythic/surreal with a folky dream like quality.

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

My artwork is all about healing–healing of the Emotional Self, Physical Body, Human Relationships and our Spiritual Relationship with the Earth and its Animals and Plants. My work explores the Archetypes often inspired by events and dreams in my own life and those I observe around me, including some of the great issues of the planet. My artwork is figurative. It often goes back and forth between pattern and simplicity. As I work, I become more aware of body language and the nuances of experience and what that can imply in combination with story and sensation, thus allowing my unconscious to express more feeling. At this point I am enjoying connecting the psychological/mythic realms with ecological issues as well as relationships, music, dance and healing. My work has been described as narrative/visionary/surreal, and I think it fits.
