Dev Chandra was born on 3 May 1993 in Mungra Badshahpur, Jaunpur district, Uttar Pradesh, India. He developed an interest in painting from an early age and pursued formal art training at the Faculty of Visual Arts at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), where he completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2014. After graduation, he moved to Mumbai and worked in the commercial art and design field before returning fully to his painting practice. His early professional experience in design influenced his visual vocabulary and technical approach to composition. Artistic career Dev Chandra’s artistic work is rooted in his lifelong engagement with the natural world, especially the Himalayan mountain ranges. Inspired by his mountain expeditions, childhood memories, and ancestral narratives, his landscapes go beyond physical topography to convey deeper psychological and emotional experiences. His artistic philosophy treats mountains not simply as geographies but as carriers of memory, emotion, and introspection; in his own words, the mountainous terrain becomes a meditation space where memory, experience, and spiritual reflection converge. Chandra’s work reflects symbolic use of colour, layered forms, and atmospheric compositions that evoke solitude, endurance, and transcendent beauty, elements often interpreted as psychological landscapes within contemporary art discourse.
