About The Artwork
I was a young artist from Rome, Italy, when I met Francesca Woodman in Soho, NY., in 1978. My relationship with her and her death were a haunting experience for me until today. Only recently did I process it enough to let it be known to the world that I was Francesca's lover before she took her own life. Here I portray Francesca as she stands in the Portal of her genius as an artist and photographer at the moment when the world stops in admiration for her legacy. Francesca's hopes were fulfilled only after her passing but doors remained forever unopened for herself. Her fascination with photography and herself as the model were her reason for living and the portal to knowing her. It was a magical encounter, our inner lights flashing with electrical bolts.This work is a tribute to Francesca's unwavering belief that she had to bring a uniqueness relevant to her, as a budding photographer in New York City. May her dreams be fulfilled as we enjoy her work and she stands in the spotlight of her dreams. I select the digital medium for the veracity of her image, as well as to portray the eerie standstill of her presence in my life. I took the original photograph while we visited the Leo Castelli gallery together at the time of his Andy Warhol show opening in 1979. the actual image can be found on my Saatchi page as well. In Rome, Italy, I was drawing and painting since childhood. When I arrived in New York City with $50 in my pocket, I called a few advertising agencies and got my first job working in the Empire State building. I became a sought-after commercial artist working with Geoffrey Hayes, art director of well-known advertising stints such as his famed Absolute Vodka campaign. My collages of New York City in surrealistic postcards were published and sold by the Metropolitan museum in 1979. I translated my love for the Old Masters into watercolor portraits of their works. On the other hand, my love for surrealism expresses my present stage of introspection in digital works of Surrealistic and Abstract-Expressionistic art. I was photographer Francesca Woodman's boyfriend at the time of her death and I introduce my photo of her as I fused it with my work.
