Born in Amsterdam, Holland, 1950. In my photographic work one can, through the years, notice a steady rising curve in the domain of focus, colourfastness, true-to-life rendering etc. It shows the dedication to represent reality as truthful as possible. Never, though, a photograph turns out to be just a good representation of the pictured reality. Besides the primary representation, images and objects contain structures or details that strike me and introduce me into hitherto unnoticed realities, that apparently were available all along. The difference between reality and an image of reality has always intrigued me. In my work as a psychotherapist I have grown attached to the fundamental subjectivity of the perception of truth. In my graphic work I sometimes remain close to the original image or object, but more often a new, not easily reducible image emerges. For some time I struggled with the urge to explain how my images come to be. Out of enthusiasm and wonder I wanted to explain their birth, but simultaneously I'm abhorred by art that only appeals after having been clarified and annotated. Art should be able to thrill the beholder all by itself. Of course, an explanation can deepen the understanding of the becoming of a work of art, but it should never be a conditio-sine-qua-non for its enjoyability. I hope my inspiration is visible and contagious.
