Karaman, who was born in Transnistria, a country annexed by Moldova in the 90’s, chose her dark artistic language on purpose. During her childhood, before she was forced to leave home due to war situation she had to speak Russian instead of her native Moldavian language. Later, Karaman’s family seeked refuge in the South of Ukraine, a region where the Russian language also appeared to be one of the main used languages. Years later when southern parts of Ukraine illegally got occupied by pro-russian separatists, Russian unwillingly became the main language again, thus triggering the artist's memories of being forced to act against her own will. Due to the full scale invasion of Russia the artist had to leave her home again seeking shelter in Berlin, Germany. A lot of her art is dedicated to the pain she goes through during her life.
