About The Artwork

This image of Notre-Dame was taken on the same visit as the one of Pont Alexandre III in 1969. It is an unusual perspective: one of the transepts and the spire from a Bateau Mouche boat on the Seine River below street level. I wanted the image to look like an old etching, and it took quite a bit of experimentation in Photoshop® to achieve that effect. Note that the image is not black and white: there are subtle variations of colors in the foliage, the sky, the stone, and the statues. I worked for many hours to achieve this result, going over every pixel sometimes several times, and reconstructed the image literally bit-by-bit. The result, insofar as I know, is unique. This image is all the more precious because it was taken before the great fire of 15 April 2019, which destroyed the wooden spire along with the roof and the wooden elements in the interior. The cathedral is closed to visitors until the reconstruction is complete, estimated to be late in 2024. Unfortunately, it won’t be open in time for the Paris Summer Olympics. Claude Monet, one of the major influencers of my work, painted the façade of the Rouen Cathedral thirty times. Why, might one ask? Because both painting and photography are all about the light, which is never the same twice. My hope for you is that this image will enable you to see Notre-Dame in a new light.

The common thread running through all of her work is to evoke a reaction of pleasant surprise, for the viewer to think, “WOW – That is so beautiful!” Her work engages the viewers at a deep level and shows them how to see the world in new ways.
