Unearth the courageous journeys of the Underground Railroad with "Pathways to Freedom," a striking digital illustration overlaid on an 1870 census map. This piece commemorates the escape routes used by enslaved people seeking freedom, as recounted in the Federal Writers' Project interviews from 1936 to 1938. This artwork highlights the vital routes of the Underground Railroad during the Fugitive Slave Law period (1850-1861), a time when seeking freedom was a federal crime. The map, part of Francis Walker's "Statistical Atlas of the United States," was the first to use color shading to represent population data, adding cultural meaning to the statistics. The 1870 census uniquely recognized Blacks as individuals, capturing the same vital statistics as whites for the first time, moving away from the dehumanizing "Slave Questionnaire." This illustration honors the bravery and resilience of those who fought for freedom and those who aided them. Ideal for history buffs, educators, and art lovers, this piece serves as a powerful reminder of the struggles and triumphs of the Underground Railroad. Perfect for display in homes, classrooms, or offices, it adds a significant historical and cultural dimension to any setting. As an artist, I tell visual stories that reveal, question, and celebrate how people interact with the natural and built environment around them. I combine historic maps from the public domain collection of the Library of Congress, with my own illustrations in an attempt to reveal layered meanings derived from history, mythology, folklore and nature. I'm most interested in the often uneasy process of forging a context that surrounds people and places. This often results in producing more questions than answers, which has required a certain level of learned humility, and acceptance that secrets do not loose their grip easily. Artworks are available in two ways, signed limited editions, and unsigned open editions. The signed limited edition Giclee prints are printed by Candela Fine Art Printing using archival inks on archival Canson Edition Etching paper. The unsigned open edition prints are made available to honor the originating principles of maps - as shared visual knowledge to meant to inform, inspire, and guide. I'm excited to bring these works of art to current day explorers through similar means of mechanical reproduction meant for wide distribution and affordability.
