This is a study from a series of 3D images. The first step in my process photo realistically mimics the way light interacts with 3-dimensional objects in a virtual world. The synthesized objects and simulated light behave exactly as their counterparts do. The process is analogous to my experience as...

DISCOVERED IN LIGHT Decades ago, I found my vision going beyond what I felt was possible with paint, however my experience as a painter has continued to inspire my work. I loved the fluidity and immediacy of paint, but I felt that paint alone could not fully express what I aspired to. I began experimenting with light and became intrigued with its purity, vibrancy and energy. But how might light be controlled? Could it be somehow held in a finished composition? First there were projectors, translucent liquids, paintings on glass, variable strobe lights and motorized objects covered in reflective materials. I designed programmable electronic devices and worked with synthesizers, arrays of lightbulbs, oscillographic displays and computers. I had begun to reach fluidity, but lacked immediacy. I could create endless compositions but only with an unacceptable latency with programming, patching and construction requiring weeks of work or more. This search continues, now reaching nearly 50 years. This body of work comes as close as I have been able to realizing that desired mix of fluidity and immediacy. I work in several directions using a mix of photography, 3D CGI and electronics. My processes combine sudden discovery with gradual refinement merging photographic, painterly, multimedia and computational techniques. The photographic aspect enables me to capture raw material intuitively. The painterly aspect provides fluidity – a detailed surface endlessly malleable and unlimited. As my images are unconstrained by physicality, they may be endlessly reworked and presented using pigment, light or methods not yet imagined. This is the paint than never dries.
