Some Native American tribes would put their dead upon scaffolds. It is to help speed the deceased soul's passage into the spiritual afterlife faster. This photo represents one family's belief to honor their family member in the traditional ways, even though the deceased is buried underground. Many items left on top of the grave show who this person was, the things they enjoyed in life, and who they were to family and friends. Growing up on a Native American reservation, I went to many funerals. My family's graves are near this grave. It had always intrigued me why this grave had this scaffold around it until I was older and learned what it represented. This is a first-hand look into the traditions of some Native American burials.
