A Study of Chinese Medicine No.016 Drawing

My father is retired from practicing traditional Chinese Medicine, this started in the village where I was born and continued when he owned a small pharmacy in the nearby town Yangjang. I spent a substantial amount of time here as a child; the colours, smell and texture of all the medicines are clearly printed on my mind. Additionally, I have a long personal journey with traditional medicine through being treated for my skin condition, and have vivid memories of my father testing out potions and traditional therapies attempting to ease my symptoms. In China we use traditional medicine from many sources including plants, animals and minerals and this is integrated into our daily life for food, treatment and for pleasure. For local people this is part of the landscape, you live in it, it is just a normal part of your life. The work draws on historical botanical notation and expresses my personal relationship to the source medicine examining each element in detail and communicating my connection. 《中药》系列源于我个人的记忆和经验。我父亲与中药打了一辈子交道，他跟随爷爷的脚步，从江湖郎中慢慢积累，最后到县城拥有一家小药店。我童年中的大部分记忆，都与父亲的药店有关，我在货柜药包中捉迷藏，帮忙搬药草，在药盅里捣药，药店里面的各种药材，它们的气味、颜色、质感，都在不知不觉中渗入我的身体。这种渗入还因为有时候生病，父亲用不同的药材熬的汤剂让我喝，从而变得更加切实，我也从小就知道各种不同的“良药苦口”的“苦”。 中药不仅仅意味着“药”或“中国的药”，对于国人来说，只是一种生活的方式。我们从不同的生活环境中，选择不同的植物、动物、矿物或任何有用的东西，再“对症下药”，它们可以是一剂药方，一份食材，一杯茶饮。在历史长河中，“人”与“药”建立了千丝万缕的联系。就我个人来说，绘画是我目前最适合表现这种联系的方式。我尝试通过抽取中药的外形轮廓，加入记忆中的场景、肌理和色彩，并尝试不同的色彩及材料的组合，表达不同的“气味”，一种通感的对接。
