About The Artwork
Aerial cityscape of the Bo-Kaap, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa. When visiting the Bo-Kaap, with all of its restaurants and boutique shops, it's all too easy to disregard the rather sombre beginnings of this area on the slopes of Signal Hill. I've tried to capture the essence of solemnity that I felt when visiting The Castle in Cape Town years ago – especially when seeing those dungeons, as well as the shackles used on slaves... So it's almost as if these bright colours, painted so after emancipation in 1834, represent no more than a brave face to mask the centuries of oppression.
