ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This appears to be a standard still life image but the objects are selected to depict the three major areas of realistic art: still life, figure and landscape. The two polaroids show a female and male nude and the landscape space is represented by the Dutch postcard. The apples and cherries are presented using a dramatic light source. The subtle blue/gray of the paper serves as a mid-tone allowing the black and white charcoal to function as darks and highlights.

Christopher Hickey earned the MFA degree in printmaking from the University of Nebraska and the BFA degree from Miami University of Ohio. His paintings, prints and drawings, have been exhibited in numerous international, national, and regional juried exhibitions. Venues include the High Museum of Art, the Sheldon Museum of Art, the LaGrange Museum of Art, Clark Atlanta University Art Museum, the University of Richmond Museums, and the Hardwerker Gallery at Ithaca College, among many others. Artist Statement My current practice centers on still life painting. Objects are typically arranged in complex structures to create representational challenges. Working from life, I am attempting to accurately capture the observed forms while balancing the need to achieve an effective composition. In addition to this observational process, there is the intrinsic and/or symbolic meaning of the objects themselves. The works can be artistically formal or narratively complex, depending on the visual challenges experienced during the process of representation. In translating the arrangements of objects onto a picture plane I hope to express a level of sensuality through sight and touch.
