About The Artwork

An imaginary tree, halfway between a baobab and an oak, stretches out under a pink sky. As if carved into the bark, silhouettes seem mummified for eternity. Around the circumference, intriguing mauve creatures act as guardians of a probable secret. Patrick Gourgouillat created "Arbre sans généalogie" in a moment of astonishment. For him, genealogy is a cartography where unknown life stories are frozen. Through the family tree, some will see the path of a collective unconscious. We then have to come to terms with what does not or no longer belong to us. That's the question! Here, the artist has chosen to carve into the bark of tormented beings, themselves heirs to the pain, and perhaps the joy, of foreign descendants. How much pain will we have to endure in our role as successors? There's a lot of work ahead... This work is based on the very genesis of the 'Third Month' series. The artist based his work on visits to psychiatric wards to create a panorama of human 'mal de vivre'. Far from being heavy, this colourful series is an almost joyful exploration of the twists and turns of the human soul. This work was painted on paper using felt-tip pens diluted with water (like watercolours). The colours were then fixed with markers. The work is framed with a passe-partout.

"Everything is important, everything is beautiful, everything is sad. Where do we start if we choose to tell life and make it a work of art? Michèle Mailhot My work is eclectic, both in its form and in the use of media. In general, I work in "series". I think that one of the ways of making things interesting is through diversity: the styles as well as the techniques are varied. It can be the animal world [The Animals], societal criticism [Human Behaviour], comic strip-like drawing [Mr Doggy], crazy images as if from a dream or nightmare [Short Stories], gentle melancholy [Sky Blue] or, based on my own experience, phantasmagorical worlds in a dazzling frenzy [Viva La Vida]. I am currently working on the latter series. These series are very different from each other. What interests me are the variations in energy that they imply for me. So I go from one thing to another like one goes through experiences. This is often what happens in art in general and in life in particular.
