I drew a shape on paper, then filled the background with graphite.  Within the shape, I drew figures and creatures, with no preparatory sketches or sources.  I rubbed out portions of the background with a kneaded eraser and continued to draw the same types of creatures that were in the shape.  Themes of excavation, nature and evolution inspired me to create this piece.

Craig Moran was born in Washington, DC, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Studio Art at the University of Virginia (UVA). He received a fifth-year arts fellowship at UVA, and completed a Post-Baccalaureate in Painting and Drawing at the School of Art Institute of Chicago. Mr. Moran has lived in San Francisco and Chicago, as well as various parts of Virginia. He currently resides in Washington, DC.
