Botanical Shadows nº 1 - Black ink botanic illustration Drawing

This botanical illustration of a blackthorn is part of "Botanical Shadows" collection. I started this botanical illustrations in 2019. I've been adding some more artworks to the collection in 2020, during confinement and 2021; I guess I needed to bring some fresh nature to the studio during the pandemic. Great part of my inspiration cames from nature and with this collection I wanted to focus on the shapes of this nature. Playing with the positive and negative space, using only black ink over white paper. I wanted to forget about color, light, tones... the important here is the place it occupies in space. The result of this exercice is a minimalistic botanical illustration. A kinf of image that it's shaped agains a white wall when the sun touches the tree and we can see it's shadow on it. To make this illustration I took a blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) as a theme. This plants are popular in my hometown, the Basque Country. They are used to make an alcoholic drink called Patxaran. We used to go to the mountain to take them when I was a child and later bring them home to prepare the Patxaran. In the illustration you can see the different periods on its floration. The artwork is NOT framed. The illustration is made on 300gr Fabriano wattercolour paper. It's a quality paper with a little texture. When I think about framing the illustrations of this collection, wood frame cames to my mind; dark brown or light brown, with white space between the illustration and the frame.
