ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Bow Down was created in 2018 while I was working as a substitute teacher and creating art for various art shows. I created this piece to honor the social movement Black Girl Magic made popular by CaShawn Thompson in 2013. I was also captured by singer Beyoncé Knowles song "Flawless" on her 2013 release titled Beyoncé. My hope is viewers will feel the same feelings of Black Women today. We are women who know about our resilience, our extraordinary beauty, we are deeply in love with the color of our skin, and we are never apprehensive when thinking of ourselves as queens. So you must "Bow Down". I used colored pencil and graphite to produce this drawing so the bright shades of purple, brown and black would stand at attention. Of course, honoring the Black Girl Magic movement simply stated required a beautiful black woman as my subject matter.
