This piece was inspired by the work I’ve been doing with local children. These children have grown up in extreme poverty and have very little hope of 'breaking the chain’ of poverty that they have been born into. By bringing their plight to the public eye, I hope to motivate people to be more aware of their own circumstances, perhaps their own privilege; as well as those circumstances of people around them who may not have been born with the same advantages in life; and to inspire them to live life more consciously, in a way that redresses the imbalance that neither chose.

I chose charcoal as medium for this piece as it can be messy and a little complicated - just as is the subject. It can bring forth beauty whilst at the same time a certain level of gravity to the composition.
