Confusion Drawing

With the “Fragility of Self” series, I endeavored to reveal the confusion of establishing an authentic sense of self in a multicultural, highly volatile and unpredictable society. Identity can be defined as the way an individual understands himself in relation to the world. Typically, society serves as a relatively stable environment in which each individual can define and integrate distinctive qualities into a balanced understanding of self. In a pluralistic society, however, clashes between cultures and the resulting confusion concerning group loyalties and roles therein may lead to considerable discomfort. The inability to reconcile aspects of the self into a relatively coherent and acceptable sense of self, known as identity distress, causes considerable emotional and psychological turmoil such as overwhelming anger, relentless loneliness and agonizing hopelessness.
