I work with animals because they represent a purity and perfection I could never duplicate. They also help me work without a narrative, allowing me to go deep into the drawing which is essentially my spiritual practice, a place of deep presence where I can access grace. born St Louis Missouri I realized at a young age that I process the world through my hands. While drawing, painting, sculpting and sewing I work through and make sense of my life as it unfolds. For me it is a natural way to examine and get closer to my experience. I have a twin sister who lost her mind while involved in a small spiritual community in Los Angeles. An awakening she was not ready for turned into a long transformational period for us where I developed a deep fascination for epigenetics, alchemy and ancestry as she very slowly found her grounding. It was then going through my own journey of working with a congenital spinal deformity that I realized myself as a healer. I use my heightened sensitivities and strong connection to the natural world to guide the imagery in my work. The mirror images of animals in my pieces are a personal study into the relationship of identical twins while the lone creatures represent my move towards identity separation. The groupings I paint represent the dance of our ancestors and our connection to them and every thing around us. I use animals as my main subject matter because they have a purity and beauty to me that help me observe without a narrative. Here I can break down shape into its simplest form of light and shadow and at the same time observe my singular interpretation based on my own life experience and ancestral influences. It is during this pairing down process that new layers come into awareness and l finally become still. Here I am left empty and can witness the process of creation itself. Meagan lives and works in the Bay Area with her young daughter Ada.
