About The Artwork

In Search of Gold is a visual story based on Artist's battle with terminal illness and its after-effects. Traditional treatment caused harsh, undesirable reactions for her. The artist had to search for an alternative cure and one of them is ‘liquid gold’ - Manuka Honey. In a wider sense, the series expresses that all people have their own struggles and we each have to search our own cure. The artworks has been made using pen, black Indian ink and gold acrylic ink. Ink is used frequently throughout Eliyah’s work due to its ability to dry almost instantly, capturing the emotions experienced throughout the creative process. Eliyah has used white watercolour paper to visually create a sense of emptiness and recycled Khadi paper which contrasts this with colour and texture. The portraits have been drawn using rough strokes which create an unsettling image. The empty white space around the women evoke feelings of isolation. The women also connote invisible health conditions, vulnerability, concepts of beauty and our perception of nature. The bees, honeycombs and spotted patterns have been painted using a vibrant gold against a thin layer of black. The use of subtle strokes create a soft image of the bees which lack detail. The bees symbolise a remedy, community, the ability to heal, nature and our relationship with it. Varying patterns of dots express the variety of issues which people face.
