About The Artwork

Northern eschatology Fenrir (literally "swamp dweller") is one of the three children of the god of discord Loki and the giant Angrboda - messenger of misfortune. Prophecies revealed to the gods that this monstrous offspring would cause terrible calamities that cause their loss - the Ragnarök : « Fenrisúlfr will go forth with his mouth opened wide, his upper jaw touching the sky and his lower jaw the earth, and flames will burn from his eyes and nostrils. » — Gylfaginning, chapter 51 The gods wanted to ward off their fate. Thus Jörmungand - the serpent of Midgard and brother of Fenrir was thrown into the abyss, while Hel - their sister - was precipitated in Niflheim, the world of the dead. Fenrir, while he was raised by the Ases from the moment of his birth, had grown immeasurably, his power and dangerousness frightening so that the gods decided to chained him. But what a perilous undertaking … that happened only by the cunning, the power and the mistrust of the wolf being equaled only by his pride. Indeed, the gods challenged Fenrir to agree to let himself be chained and to free himself thus proving to all his extraordinary power. Fenrir increased his prestige by freeing himself for the first time from his chain (Loeding). He managed a second time, without difficulty to break his second chain yet much stronger (Dromi). Wiping out this second failure, the Æsirs sent Skimir to Svartalfaheimr, soliciting dark elves to create a magical bond. When bragging brings down freedom The elves set to work and delivered a link consisting of cat footsteps, female beard, mountain roots, bear's nerves, fish breath, and bird spit. This link, with the appearance of a silk ribbon, was scorned by Fenrir, who refused to submit a third time to the test, adding nothing to his splendour. Unless it is bewitched, in which case a pledge of good faith should be given him: "I'm not inclined to let myself go through this cord. But let one of you put your hand in my mouth as a pledge that everything will happen without betrayal.  » Tyr, the brave god, put his hand in the canin mouth. Attached Fenrir, so tried, and the more he pulled, the more the link squeezed him, the more the wolf struggled with vigor and rage. But the lace stiffened and condemned Fenrir to immobility in the general hilarity of the gods. Humiliated and bloody, Fenrir tore Tyr's hand. Vanquished, deceived, Fenrir was writhing with ever more aggressive fury. To neutralize him, Fenrir's jaws were stuck with a sword. Continually roaring, the drool and blood gushed out and flowed continuously from his jaws forming the rivers Vån (hope) and Víl (will). With the Giant Iarnvidia he will spawn the Managarms (the wolves of the moon), whose fiercest scavengers : Hati (hatred) and Skoll (repulsion) tirelessly pursuing Sol, the conductor of the Sun's chariot, and Mani the driver of the tank of the Moon until dismissing them during Ragnarök. The gods did not kill him so that the fluid that makes up the monstrous fruit of Discord and Woe is not spread. Cunning has helped to overcome distrust and neutralize dangerousness by their weak points: pride and boasting. But humiliation, an incurable wound, secreted vengeful determination. Rage fathered hatred and repulsion at the risk of destroying the reality of day and night.
