About The Artwork

From a series titled "Figure (Telling)"; [also see www.stevestorz.com for others in series] The figure: as soon as another person utters something my perception of them swells into an atmosphere that is enjoined with their form. It quickly starts to undulate, telling new lines and forms. I am suddenly struck with a completely other sense of them than just before. Landscape, in particular shows my sense of a human form talking in a void, alone. It's akin to the digital vacuum we put ourselves into on-line. We are putting out words, but we are alone. Combined graphite and oil pastel are grimy materials that I like because they express my hidden moods, coveting of textures, great love of line variation. The Figure (Telling) series helps satisfy an admiration I have long had for the drawings and sculptures of figures by Giacometti yet with a more floating, mysterious sense. It is stylistically typical of many of my drawings, embracing I think, a haunting mood about humanity. I recommend float mounting to show the pin holes at corners where it was pinned to my studio wall during work, and to celebrate the waviness of the paper from the ochre wash background. Sprayed with transparent matte archival fixative.

Celebrating 44 years as a professional artist. Born in Texas City, Texas and grew up in the Pacific Northwest. I've had studios in The Silicon Valley, San Francisco, Taos, New York and have collectors from all types of life. I work in sculpture, drawings, installation art mostly. A lot of things inspire me: particularly amazing textures, mechanical and electronic equipment, line and unusual forms in nature. I work from my main studio in Gallup, NM and my remote one outside Taos, NM and frequent other artist colleagues whenever I can. My main concern is in working constantly to produce better art.
