Bea Aben shares her personal encounters amid the pandemic through two series of works told through her perpetually eclectic and sensual expressions—clearly a glimpse of the world through her kaleidoscopic lens. In her “From the Foot of the Sugar Mountain” series, she reflects upon the transformative process of making art in Montalban while being tethered to lockdown routines. “From the Foot of the Sugar Mountain series is a visual compilation of my journey growing through the mundane...I have been creating my recent works in Montalban for almost a year now and the view of the mountains during morning/ afternoon walks was a big help not only in my creative process but also with my psyche…” She mentions psyche—the human soul—revealing a psychological, if not spiritual, layer to her creative process in the same way that surrealists channeled the power of the unconscious, dreams, and liberating artistic expression and the abstract expressionists’ intuitive approach to art-making.
