ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This work “Genesis of a Philosophical Concept: Chapter I - Clarity (Activity)” is a leaf out of the portfolio “A Memory Sculpture – The Genesis of a Philosophical Concept” (2020). It is located at the interface between Philosophy, Psychology, and the Fine Arts. This work is drawn on the slightly browned paper (about 25 years old) of a philosophical notebook in which philosophical thoughts and drafts were collected. More generally “Memory Sculptures” are performative compositions which translate psychic processes into direct physical actions on paper. Based on a symbol-language the displayed drawings act as thinking tools to design an internal architecture of sculptural memory. This work is signed on the reverse and provided with a work stamp as well as an artist stamp with information about the materials, year of creation, title, size etc. Please follow the link to view more works from this series: https://www.saatchiart.com/art-collection/Genesis-of-a-philosophical-concept-Chapter-I-Clarity/73082/373102/view

Drawing as sculpting into oneself. "In Mersolis Schöne's artistic work, there are fascinating connections and correspondences between drawing, text, film, and music, on or in front of philosophical underpinnings and backgrounds, as well as between him and artists from all disciplines." (INSEL) Mersolis Schöne is a German Artist, Film Director, and Researcher based in Vienna, Austria. He is a member of Künstlerhaus Wien in Austria, The Professional Association of Visual Artists in Germany, and other associations. The Memory Sculpture drawings presented at Saatchi serve as process-oriented interaction and thinking tools to design an internal architecture of sculptural memory. They consist of a series of recurring symbols that are arranged in new compositions. Each symbol has a fixed meaning, and new meanings are created by combining these individual symbols into symbol formations. During the drawing process, places of reflection, encounter and conceptualization are to be created. For this reason, there is often interaction with other artists, in which the works are created during the performative exchange.
