The charcoal sketch depicts a striking portrait of a Hmong girl standing beneath a canopy of green leaves. The girl's sharp features are brought to life by the artist's masterful blending of light and dark tones to create depth and texture. The Hmong girl is dressed in traditional clothing, her eyes are soulful and deep, conveying a sense of quiet strength and resilience. The artist has captured the essence of her beauty with delicate details such as the curve of her cheekbones and the gentle slope of her nose. Above her, the leaves of the plant are rendered with bold lines and shading, creating a sense of movement and depth. The contrast between the hard, natural shapes of the leaves and the soft lines of the girl's face and clothing adds to the drama and intensity of the piece. Overall, the charcoal sketch is a powerful representation of a Hmong girl, capturing both her external beauty and the inner strength and dignity that lies within.

David Lang is an artist from the United States based in Vietnam working in traditional charcoal on giấy dó (handmade paper). Check out one of my exhibition EBooks here: ?usp=sharing and here: ?usp=sharing His art is based on the everyday lifestyles of various ethnic groups in Vietnam, typically those in the north such as the Dao, H’Mông, and Pà Thẻn. He draws interpersonal relationships and wants to understand how people get, and don’t get, along. His rustic artworks are crafted to feel old, earthy, and traditional. Some materials that he uses sparingly are graphite, acetone, ink, and color highlights from chalk, acrylics, and watercolor. David graduated from Bard College with an interdisciplinary major in 2009 in the arts and now works from a private art studio in Saigon. My works are housed in private and public galleries in Vietnam, Thailand, Germany, and the United States.
