Hackney Downs Studios Drawing

This is probably the first instance where I use oil pastels in a similar way that I use acrylic on canvas: focussing on the architecture and the buildings, which is something that I used to do a lot in my art practice up until I started using mainly oil pastel. This drawing is inspired by a photograph I took while I was in the Autumn Yard Café, one of the first places I went to to have breakfast when we moved to London. Today I can still feel what I felt at the time: a mix of excitement and happiness, a sense of adventure for being in a new city and getting to discover my area (Dalston - Stoke Newington). I love experiencing new things and ,at the same time, the new things I found in London seemed to fit me perfectly, it was like I have discovered a place that could be my home, and It happened by pure chance. Drawing this scene gave me the chance to depict other things that I love: reflections in window, I like it so much to include in a drawing the things that you can see outside, through a window and the things that are inside but that one can see reflected in the glass. I took this photograph on a late afternoon in winter, when the sky is turning darker but there is still a diffused light and the color palette was amazing: the light blues and greys made by the approaching night contrasted by the yellows and whites of the reflected lights. I would say it's a symphony in yellow and blue at dusk. Sennelier oil pastels are my favourite medium at the moment and using them to paint and draw is just amazing for me, every time I am working on a new piece of art I feel like I am traveling in time, back to the place and the moment when I first saw the scene, and it's like living it again. I hope this artwork will transport you to London, a city full of surprises and where everyone can feel at home. This artwork is made with Sennelier oil pastels, a great brand with a rich history: these pastels were in fact invented for Pablo Picasso, and although he is not among my favourite artists, it is nice to think about walking in the steps of such famous artists, when using them. I like to think as my art more related to artists such as Andy Warhol for the use of colour and focus on everyday life objects, and Edward Hopper, for the way I look at people and the city. This, like all the artworks from this series, has been treated with three layers of fixing spray; nonetheless I advise to promptly frame it with a glass too, to protect it from the dust.
