Hedge Drawing

I drew this while my snow tires were being put on. I draw to relieve boredom, looking at the paper to avoid looking at the traffic and the glum gray sky outside. This pattern is meaningless, which doesn't mean it's without form. I began with a few curled lines and began elaborating with circles and lozenges and other shapes, clinging to the lines like leaves and berries, filling out the empty corners uniformly but in a disorderly way. You will not be able to see where it began but I can. It grew disheveledly. Pattern without pattern, no fibonacci order to it. Eventually it began to look to me like a hedge, or the profile of a hedge, but someone else saw it and said it looked like a piece of toast, which is true, or maybe like a slice of nut bread, or a haystack, or one of those fur hats they wear in central Asia. The squared off base gives it gravitas and the sloped top makes it iconic, but the dense figures inside it make it something to examine. I remember being bored as a kid, looking out the window or at the linoleum on the floor, and suddenly out of the texture of what I was looking at a face would emerge or a dramatic scene of struggling figures in a landscape. The best images don't emerge into any kind of meaning at first glance. After a few times passing it in the hall you will begin to see something. Or not.
