Icon Portrait Drawing

This drawing is made with a technique that has the objective of investigating the persistence of an image in the memory, in its formal and conceptual sense. The drawing is part of the series “ICONS”. In this series the faces, inspired by iconic images of fashion photography, are taken out of context and emerge from a vibrant dark background. The portrait appears to make its way and interrupt the viewer through an interference (the interference of memory and time). As the figures are inspired by iconic images, the viewer can have the impression of being in front of an already seen image, activating the memory process. The visibly rough surface of the sheet challenges the idea of a comforting and glossy image. The thick layer of reflective graphite, which makes the faces represented hardly visible when hit in a certain way by the light, questions about the evanescence/persistence of the figure as an icon.
