ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The work was inspired by my view I had during the Covid Lockdown in South Africa. I was lucky to spend my lockdown at a very secluded beach village on the southern Coast of South Africa. The sunsets were the one thing that kept me hopeful during this time. It was a reminder that tomorrow is still a possibility I believe that most of us have a connection when looking towards the horizon as the sun sets. Its like nature's exhibition. Its a way for humans to forget about their lives for a moment while mother nature dazzles us with her magic in colour and memory. Apart from that, this is also a homage to one of my favourite Impressionist works entitled "Impression sunrise" ,hence my title of Impression Sunset. I wanted to complete the loop. The medium is archival fine liners. I like this medium because the pen tips are so fine and the colours are vibrant. Each piece of pigment was applied by hand in the form of short strokes of colour. I applied the technique of the impressionists by juxtaposing different colours next to each other to create the shades and tints I needed. For instance, on closer inspection you can see that blue is not just blue, but made up of at least 5 different colour combinations, but when you step back they all merge together to create a cohesive gradient of colour inspired by a sunset.
