Jione Choi was born in Seoul, South Korea. In her childhood, she moved house frequently. Naturally, she had a great deal of experience of meeting new people and being separated from her friends. This environment led her to think about human relationships. She also moved to the United Kingdom two years ago, which meant she had to undergo a separation from her loved ones. At that time, she started painting people she missed very much, and she realised that she could miss someone she did not like, so she decided to draw the complicated aspects of human relationships. These relationships are so complex because they are intertwined with emotional reactions and specific situations between people. The most important motivation for her work is her own emotional reaction to others. She usually expresses extreme emotional states through her paintings, like love and hate. Sometimes, we can feel love in hatred and hatred in love; likewise, in her work, Choi deals with contradictory concepts such as physical and psychological distance between people; absence and presence; and vivid and blurred memory.
