ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is the original work and comes in a white aluminium and glass frame. Prints are an edition of 50 - available on request. “Le Voyeur” “Le Voyeur” critiques the objectifying nature of the male gaze through the depiction of a voyeuristic act. The work shows a man peering through binoculars to observe a woman, symbolising the violation of privacy and power dynamic inherent in voyeurism. The woman in the context highlights the way in which the male gaze reduces women to their physical appearance and the societal expectations placed on them to conform to a certain standard of beauty. While the use of binoculars emphasises the objectification of the woman’s body, and the problematic nature of the male gaze. The work challenges patriarchal societal norms and power structures that objectify and devalue women. It offers a perspective on the problematic nature of the male gaze, the negative consequences of voyeurism and the societal expectations of beauty that are oppressive for women.

Solène Biche is a French artist and architectural designer whose work explores contemporary concerns through levity and decadent visual style. She subverts society's expectation for austerity when dealing with sensitive topics by dignifying tragedy with beauty, presenting global issues in a more digestible form. Her work also juxtaposes cultural systems to foreground the experiences of under-represented social groups, catalyzing a sense of connection and empowerment.
