Mackenzie is a queer identifying artist and actor. Born in Australia, he received his undergraduate degree in Fine Art from The Queensland College of Art which was completed on scholarship at The Exeter College of Art in 2003. In 2005 he took a Masters in Acting at East 15 Acting School. His CV includes two solo shows and work as technical staff at The Queensland College of Art. Mackenzie’s quirky, sometimes satirical and often allegorical work started as an exploration of his own narrative being raised in the Australian suburbs. However, after he relocated to the UK his practice, which traverses drawing, painting, text and photography, pivoted more towards exploring urban dystopia and wasteland of sorts through fabricated, even mistranslated landscapes and doll-like figures. The familiar yet unsettling is the space in which most of his work resides... This includes disparate pieces from allegorical paintings and doll drawings to more immediate landscape studies. He splits his time and practice between Australia and the UK. Artists of influence have always been idiosyncratic contemporary painters of the Asia Pacific, key figures in Australian landscape painting as well as El Greco, Hieronymus Bosch, Stanley Spencer, Otto Dix, Modigliani, Howard Arkley, Jeffrey Smart, Paula Rego and Nathan Taylor. He has a studio in MotherX Studios, Hackney Wick and in Brighton.
