Media Sociallites R.I.P. Drawing

Don't wallow in the political Quagmire or Media Sociallites R.I.P. Pencil on paper, people. I think about Gauguin a lot. His palette mostly, and sometimes his snarky upperhandedness with Van Gogh. But also his painting; "Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?" It's divided into groups or compositional clusters and is a meditation on dichotomies of cool/warm, standing/prone modern/primal and most importantly spiritual/physical. Very often in art the actual manifestation or materialization of the relic is also the departure from its physical facts. The concept or transcendent non material life is born and freed from its material trappings. Imagine a flute. Now imagine it's song. The song issues from the instrument but it doesn't live in the form of the instrument. It's the same with paintings and sculpture or drawings for that matter. They are physical generators of the presence of the spiritual or the psychological and the paranormal. Back to Gauguins evocation from 1897 Tahiti as regards social media popularity contests of Likes and favorites. Really people? Where did we come from? Where are we going? Art isn't a beauty pagent or prom queen or political bloodbath. Art is an anthropological conduit between us and our oldest impulses as a people. Contests and campaigns reduce thought to bumpersticker bytes and lowest common denominators and Tweets. So if you're an artist in Lithuania or Lubbock or whereever and you wonder why you can't pile up a bunch of followers and favorites don't give it a second thought. Your art is the meaning and the real friends and family and collectors who are making you feel like you rock in person; they are real and right. Social media is like the tower of Babylon. Folly in progress that the future will look back on as Internet kitsch. Like that tattoo you got on your neck over spring break so many moons ago.
